 I would say this is up to the theme developer and not a BuddyPress default
 option.

 FYI, your members directory request is kind of implemented with the new
 [https://github.com/paulgibbs/turtleshell Turtleshell template pack].

 Check out the following screenshot as an example:

 This only works with BuddyPress 1.7.
