Comment:

 I understand that work for 1.7 is in full swing. Perhaps time to
 reconsider?

 In fact, in the new theme, it might be worth considering providing option
 to:
 - Have sections as tabs (status quo)
 - Have a long profile page with everything (except streams) on it (drag
 and drop to select what goes before and what goes after)
 - Convert all sections into widgets. Then folks can place how and where
 they want, including placing some BuddyPress streams into their WordPress
 sidebars.
