 Yes, you can move theme compatibility (TC) template parts into the theme
 to override them.
 If you move a TC home.php into the theme, yes, it won't work; you need a
 regular WordPress template file.

 I am sure it's not a good idea to consider renaming template files for
 this specific use case. That discussion should come in its own ticket, and
 in a future release.

 We don't need to add a hierarchy for TC template parts; we need to add a
 hierarchy for our regular WordPress templates.
