 Just a note - we recently added a tempfs mount (512MB)to our mysql server.
 Maybe this is standard.
 Anyhow, while it didn't 'solve' our issues with queries in question, it
 has greatly mitigated those issues - those queries are no longer writing
 temp tables to disk during high traffic.
