 Are you trying to override a BP component's directory page with a custom
 page template?

 If so, you can't based on
 [http://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/1.5.6/bp-activity/bp-
 activity-screens.php#L13 this].  A workaround is just to modify the
 activity directory index template in your theme - /activity/index.php.
