Comment:

 Not really a bug in BuddyPress; the quality relied on settings in
 WordPress. However, in BuddyPress 1.6.2 on WordPress 3.5, we've updated it
 so that the maximum image quality is used, and alongside WP's media API
 improvements, hopefully things will be better now.
