 I'm using BP Mag 1.1 (May 2012), the latest one posted at buddydev.com. As
 Brajesh stated, it does not use bp_core_new_subnav_item. Although I
 initially "hacked" bp-core-template.php so as not to worry about any
 possible problems with bp-members-template.php, I later moved functions
 bp_displayed_user_id and bp_loggedin_user_id to bp-core-template.php from
 bp-members-template.php, your 2nd option, and did not encounter any
 problems. I'll keep it this way until BP 1.6.1.

 BTW, What are the expected timeframes for BP 1.6.1 and BP Mag 1.1.1?
