 I like your crazy hack idea. Maybe put this helper function in the 1.6
 deprecated file, so people can skip loading it by setting
 $bp->load_deprecated = true ?

 Do we revert the return handling changes that I made in that patch, or
 keep both in case someday we remove this new function from core?
