 wpte - I can appreciate your frustration - I share it. WP's user
 management leaves much to be desired. But as long as BP is a WP plugin, it
 will continue to use WP's user management. And the truth is that putting
 in a ton of effort to improve this functionality in BuddyPress alone would
 be somewhat wasteful, because it would only benefit BP users, when it's
 really a much larger problem.

 Trust me, if and when I get a client that needs this functionality, I will
 develop it in such a way that it will be a WP plugin, and potentially a WP
 patch. In the meantime, you should feel free to do the same - in a
 volunteer project, nothing happens unless someone writes the code :)
