 I searched the forum & trac and only saw it briefly discussed:

 With post formats now being a core WordPress feature, I think the default
 BuddyPress theme ought to support them.

 Some existing BP themes already support post formats, e.g. 'Canvas
 BuddyPress' by WooThemes and 'Visual' by DevPress. Consider contacting
 them for patches.

 (there was no '1.5.1' available in the version list)
