 After extended discussion with jjj and DJPaul, I'm going with an approach
 similar to 2952.4.diff, with the addition of an additional
 bp_get_user_meta_key() function for fetching (and filtering) user meta
 keys.

 This method promises maximum backward compatibility, and maximum
 flexibility for plugin authors.

 I'll write up a bpdevel post to summarize the changes.
