Comment:

 Not having this problem fixed is making it extremely tiresome to test
 upgrade and installation issues.

 I don't much like
 http://trac.buddypress.org/attachment/ticket/2789/2789b.001.patch but I
 have a sense that it might be the best solution at our disposal.
