 It's not too stupid :)

 If plugins were using bp_core_add_root_component() when they didn't want a
 directory, they were doing it wrong. So yes, if they were doing it wrong,
 they will need to fix it. However, auto-page-creation has been turned off,
 so there won't be any big problems if they don't fix it - there will just
 be an erroneous admin message on the Dashboard saying that "You need a
 page to be set up for this component..."
