Comment:

 I agree that this would be a pretty cool feature, but given that user
 following only exists in a plugin at the moment, I think it makes sense
 that this functionality would happen in a plugin as well. If any
 additional hooks are needed in core in order to make it happen, please
 submit a separate ticket.
