 Confirmed.

 Instead of a blank page, I think a login form should be shown with some
 copy saying "You need to be a member of "MY PRIVATE GROUP" to view this
 message.  Please login now."

 If you're logged-in and you are not a member of the group, you should get
 redirected to the private group homepage.  By default, there's already a
 message that says "You do not have access to this activity.", so this
 would work great.

 Bumping to major because it's an usability issue.
