 Changeset http://trac.buddypress.org/changeset/2984 (a fix to
 http://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2317 ) introduced this problem.

 It based the avatar path and url on wp_load_dir(), which gets the upload
 location for the currently active blog. I think BP's intention is to have
 a single avatar per user across the site, and therefore the upload
 location for the primary blog should be used.

 From the notes in 2317 it seems that "get_blog_option()" is not a reliable
 source for the uploads location, but IMO would be a better solution than
 one that only works for a single primary blog.
