 If it helps any I've attached the code in my functions.php file that adds
 page-numbering to the bottom of the Groups, Members, and Blogs
 directories. It might give you some ideas how to implement the page-
 numbering into the core.

 I believe the original code came from @dwenaus, so kudos to him. :)
