 If you are copying avatars from a previous version of BP, this will happen
 and is related to this ticket #1231.

 Closing this ticket as duplicate.

 However, if you are copying avatars from a BP install of v1.2 and up, and
 you are experiencing this issue, please reopen this ticket.
