 Obviously much ALL links in to the member-Profiles show this behavior.
 Users can't get to their profiles and can't edit or navigate them.

 Other usernames (e.g. in the lists under /members/ or the authors pulldown
 menu of the BP admin bar) omit the dot completly without replacing it with
 a dash -- creating the same non-working URLs.
