Comment:

 I'd like to reopen this ticket to request a different solution.  I
 understand the desire to lock the root blog's permalinks to start with
 /blog to avoid conflicts with other blogs, but I feel like the conflict is
 easy enough to avoid, that the /blog shouldn't be forced on all subdomain
 based installs.  I think the /blog should be added to the permalink
 structure during initial install, but the user should have the option to
 change or remove it.

 This especially becomes an issue if migrating a blog from WP.org version
 to WPMU where the /blog subdirectory may not have been a part of the
 original site.
