 I've done this with two installs now...

 All I want to do is change the class name "widecolumn" to "narrowcolumn"
 in wp-signup.php -- should be simple enough. It's just a minor front-end
 change.

 Unfortunately, thereafter going to example.com/wp-signup.php gives a 404.

 I completely replaced all WP files trying to fix the error. No luck. The
 only way I was able to "fix" the problem was to recreate the entire
 database. I don't know how the DB is affecting this issue though.

 The .htaccess file is default.

 My host is HostGator & I'm using WPMU 2.7.
