Comment:

 Unfortunately it's disabled because it broke Buddypress and any plugin
 that needs a custom URL that normally causes a 404 on the main blog.

 I was going to add code that redirects the user on a 404 but decided
 against it because of the difficulty with dealing with plugins. You can
 use is_404() to redirect the visitor yourself with an "init" action.
