 I know plugins are able to be recognized within a subdirectory within the
 mu-plugins subdirectory.  ie:

 wp-content/mu-plugins/my-plugin/plugin.php

 It appears that widgets within a subdirectory do not though. ie:

 wp-content/mu-plugins/widgets/my-widget.php

 Moving the widget file into the mu-plugins directory does allow the widget
 to be recognized.
