I would rather see the proper attention paid to the existing blue theme
to get it fixed than to see WordPress ship with only 2 gray admin
themes.<br>

The current blue theme isn't that bad, other than the light blue header
graphics could be a bit darker (less baby blue). I'm using it in
conjunction with a custom admin branding plugin (logo/login) for a
project I'm building. If it disappears, it creates a lot more work for
me to retheme the backend so that it matches again. The gray theme just
doesn't work in this situation.<br>

I would imagine there are a lot of other users who prefer the blue to
the gray and would hate to see it disappear as well.<br>

I agree on the plugins, as there are already several out there;
however, most that I've looked at aren't being updated or only allow
you to change the header/footer, not the rest of the UI.<br>
<br>
Perhaps the blue theme could become the first "core" plugin? :D<br>
