 I think the long-term solution is actually fairly easy: display an AJAX
 message for each activated plugin, but allow filtering of the AJAX
 activation message by the just activated plugin, for example to include a
 link to your onboarding.

 Much less work than what everyone is proposing here, it seems to me.

 I’m actually against the automatic redirecting, as what happens is you’re
 taken from a WordPress UI and UX to a plugin native UI and UX, and that,
 IMHO, needs to be the result of step taken by the user.

 That doesn't mean we shouldn't revert on the change first, I think we've
 gone about this change the wrong way round and hard deprecated something
 too fast.
