Comment:

 Since @markoheijnen noted that this is not working with some unknown (but
 readily discoverable) quantity of PDFs in a currently undetectable way,
 going to punt this from 4.5.

 I'd still love to see this make its way to core. It might make the most
 sense in a feature plugin, to allow us to test with a wider variety of
 PDFs.
