 As I mentioned before; personally I would like this to be simple but
 effective:
 As I see it now, there are 4 (perhaps 5) 'states:

 - to-be-published
 - published
 - has-been-published (optionally with a 301? redirect)
 - trashed
 - (optional:) never-to-be-published

 Implement these and give the ability to create custom names coupled to any
 of these states and allow those names to be shown in the UI.
 Wouldn't this solve most (if not all) use-cases?
