I would like plugin generated notifications to expire so that they're
automatically removed after a certain number of days.

Half a dozen notifications greeted me when given access to a site
recently, all of which required action to clear.

I feel the notification system is starting to get abused.

I would like to propose that notifications generated by plugins are
automatically removed after a certain number of days (5 or 7 for example,
but with the ability to change via a filter).

If not enabled by default, perhaps it could be enabled as a theme option
 or filter.
