 Your post type still have `thumbnail` in supports:


 {{{
 'supports'           => array( 'title', 'editor', 'author', 'thumbnail',
 'excerpt', 'comments' )
 }}}

 and the problem exist only if the post type doesn't support it.

 Also, don't do your step 3 at all - it's not related.
