 Moving to a driver-style WPDB is a pretty big step. Not because of the
 changes to the code, but because of the changes to how WPDB can be
 extended.

 Releasing a driver interface is telling the world (even if it isn’t
 explicitly announced) “here is our DB interface, you can extend it to add
 new drivers”. Locking down an interface we’re comfortable supporting for a
 long time is not something we can do quickly or easily.
