 OK, so other tests showed also that it doesn't work with UPDATE statements
 either, e.g.

 {{{
 UPDATE `table_name` SET `var`=%s;
 }}}
 is replaced with
 {{{
 UPDATE `table_name` SET `var` NULL ;
 }}}

 it basically strips = sign
