 cURL is ''much'' faster (we're talking orders of magnitude) and has better
 support for a lot of things, including proxies (we only support HTTP
 proxies, cURL supports basically every type). Off the top of my head, I
 can't think of any big things that sockets don't support that we use, but
 the performance difference is worth it alone.
