Comment:

 The path is set correctly. This isn't invalid, rather, this is by design.
 The root site uses /wordpress for siteurl, but a network requires URL
 rewriting, and in that context we are able to simply rewrite the
 subdirectory out of all subsequent sites (and the network admin).
