 {{{wp_authenticate_username_password()}}} needs to check to make sure
 {{{$user}}} is not a WP_Error object early on.  It's possible that
 something hooked into {{{authenticate}}} earlier than
 {{{wp_authenticate_username_password()}}} and has already returned an
 error.
