 Now that we've got a plugin solution, does anyone want to continue work on
 the existing test-patch or somehow find a more elegant way to make a
 permanent fix in core?

 Also this should get some core devs' attention - this is doable, but any
 plugin or patch will just become stable unless we can get core traction
 behind this.
