Comment:

 Added a patch to do (B). Fun, nothing but deleting code it turned out to
 be.

 I figure you have "real" tests, but let me know if you want a test plugin
 that always asks to be upgraded, and logs its activation/deactivation
 calls to a stack stored in an options variable.
