 Looking back at this after working on the Settings API error reporting (
 #11474 ) I realized that a big part of what is needed is better support
 for automatic display of errors from WP_Error, and the current state of
 show_message() as part of the problem.

 Tons of detail in #12254 about my proposed solution. I think if a patch
 was committed to solve everything mentioned in that ticket then it would
 make the solution to this ticket much easier.
