 I'm actually not sure that saving two copies is a good idea either, there
 are pros & cons to any solution. Saving two copies solves the display
 performance problem and Otto's "I want everything to stay as HTML" desire
 but does cause other issues.

 As for an option to disable shortcodes, I don't think that is really a
 viable option considering how many things can be done with shortcodes from
 plugins.  Disabling them stunts far too much available functionality.
