 samj, I hope you're not implying that WordPress would only support wp.me
 short links?  The implication (although you didn't say it explicitly)
 seems to be that WordPress will be capable of hosting short links on any
 domain?

 That leads me to another point, which is that some people use long domain
 or subdomain names.  To pull this off properly WordPress will need a
 native cross-domain forwarder that can be installed on a 2nd-level domain
 instead of www. or blog.
