 I upgraded a site from WPMU 2.8.4a to 2.8.5.2. Two problems occurred:

 1. /tmp/mysql.sock was corrupted. I removed the file and restarted mysql
 to fix it.
 2. Once restarted, wp_1_postmeta needed repair. From mysql command line, I
 ran this to fix: "repair table wp_1_postmeta"
