 I think the best argument against putting this in core is that it doesn't
 cover hierarchical category pages.  So, if I want a shortlink for
 myblog/category/cat1/subcat2/long-annoying-subcat3/ then the guid
 forwarding is no use.  There would have to be a redirection table, which I
 would agree is outside the scope of a blog core.
