 I understand that, but even a feature must be judged as being worth it or
 harmful or what have you.

 Such an feature basically adds a lot of seemingly useless work to the
 system. You're running a lot of extra CPU cycles here, for no real
 tangible benefits that I can see. So I think the "feature" doesn't make
 any sense.
