 In Wordpress 2.3.2 on line 561 of wp-includes/query.php:

 `if ( !is_array($qv['category___not_in']) ||
 empty($qv['category__not_in']) ) {`

 There is an extra underscore in the first `category___not_in` which meant
 `category__not_in` did not work for me at all. Worked fine when I removed
 it.
