Comment:

 It sounds like you've got a lot of items in the posts table of type 'post'
 which are not actually posts..

 AFAIK, WordPress will never set a 'post' to status of 'inherit'.. So i'm
 suggesting that its caused by a Plugin, Dump out the 'post' type records
 which have non-0 post_parents and/or non-standard post_status, Have a look
 and see if you reconise it from something else.
