Just pulled the trigger on it now. Thanks for the feedback.

Unfortunately this ticket exposed a number of inconsistencies, but I think
I've found the sweet spot at this point.

Combined with http://core.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/16337, there are no
known outstanding bugs or compatibility issues.
