This is usually caused by the download timing out and the whole file not getting downloaded.

You may need to try using a different HTTP transport or extending the timeouts

It would be worth installing core-control <http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/core-control/> and checking to see which transport you are using and if a different one is more successful
