This usually means the script took too long to complete so the MySQL
connection got impatient and closed. The failure to reconnect is a
weakness in the WordPress database class, wpdb, which needs to be
fixed.

Meanwhile, you'll need to install 3.0. Download and unzip the package,
then upload all of the files to your host. You should ask on the
forums if you need more detailed help.

Thanks for reporting the errors. That should lead to a fix for wpdb. :)
