I would say the best SEO Solution is h1 for the overall site title and h2
for the post / page title and can repeat for further post or excerpts
titles. Subtitles within a post would then have to start with h3. From a SEO
point of view this is the most efficient.

ugh I've just done a check:
Front page - no h1
single post - no h2
single page - no h2

It certainly isn't good for accessibility like that. I never thought to  
check this before, wish I had done because I certainly would have raised it

as an issue.
A missing h1 isn't too bad, but going from 1 -3 and missing out 2 is, it  
can be extremely confusing.

More things to add to my child theme then.
