I think most of the contradictions that Gene has pointed out have simply
been poor or misunderstood semantics. I believe when scribu said
automated, he simply meant that all plugins on Extend will now
automatically have the ability for end users to share compatibility
results without relying on a Codex page, not that all plugins have their
compatibilities automatically generated. A poor word choice maybe, but
it is what it is. We don't need to continue going on and on about it.

The fact is that the people that decide things for WP.org decided that
the compatibility reporting tool on the plugin page itself is preferable
to the compatibility page centralized on the Codex. On that, I, and I
believe many others, are in agreement that it is a step forward. I
wouldn't be surprised if a very large percentage of plugin devs never
knew of the existence of those pages, but it's hard to miss something
that is on your plugin's page.

I believe that the participation in compatibility reporting is still
going to be low, but I don't think it will be any worse than the low
level of compatibility reporting that occurred on the Codex.

Now... Can we please move on beyond this topic?
