Like I said earlier, it has nothing to do with the version of PHP.
What version of PHP you are running is irrelevant. It's all about the
server configuration. Hosts that offer a choice tend to work better
with PHP 5. This is for several reasons, but the actual version has
nothing to do with it whatsoever.

The automatic upgrade CAN WORK with PHP 4 just fine.
